一、先从比较令人迷惑的involve 说起。当一个事物包含不同性质的元素时，“包含”要用involve。

例如：A two party protocol involves two participants.（一个两方协议包含两个参与者。）这个例句最能体现involve 的意思，因为两方协议除了“包含”两个参与者之外，还包含其他性质的元素：协议过程、协议规则等。

A table tennis match involves two players. 这里用involve 是因为乒乓球比赛还包含场地、裁判风等不同性质的元素。

可见，involve有时翻译成“涉及”比较好。此外，involve的被动态be involved in 一般翻译为“参加”，例如：Users are involved in the test of the protocol.（用户参加了协议的测试。）

二、include 的“包含”是指一个事物包含同一类元素。例如：Users include students and teaching staff.（用户包括学生和教工。）“用户”只包含人这一类元素。A protocol includes modules.（协议包含模块。）协议只包含模块这一类元素。

显然，A two part protocol includes two participants 或 A table tennis match includes two players 都是错误的。

注意，如果把不同类元素抽象成一类元素，就可以用include，例如：A table tennis match includes various entities like two players, a playground and a judge.（一场乒乓球赛包含各种实体………）这里把不同元素都抽象成“实体”entity这一类元素。

include表示的“包含”一般不全面，全面的包含（即“组成”）用consist of、be comprised of 、make up of 等。

三、contain的基本意思是在一个“容器”内“包含”，例如：A box contains books. A byte contains a character.（一个字节包含一个字符。）这里把字节当容器了。

注意一本书所包含的内容用contain，例如：The book contains classic and modern cryptography.（这本书包括经典和现代密码学。）这也应该是书的目录用contents的原因吧。

四、involve有时可以与include、contain互换，例如：Our work includes theoretical analysis and computer simulation.（我们的工作包括理论分析和计算机模拟。）这里把理论分析和计算机模拟看成同一类的活动，这个句子也可以是：Our work involves theoretical analysis and computer simulation. 而这里把理论分析和计算机模拟不看成同一类活动。还有：The newly published book contains/involves basis and applications of artificial intelligence.（新出版的书包括人工智能的基础和应用。）

五、cover是我们容易忽略的单词，它的“包含”的意思由本意“覆盖”引申而来，可以认为与include同义，但侧重所包含的内容，可以用于书，例如：

What does this book cover？（这本书的内容是什么？）

The quiz will cover Chapter 1 through Chapter 5. （测验将包括第一到第五章。）

This work should have been covered in the References. （这项工作本应该包含在参考文献中的。）
